Ripple Energy and Your Co-op Energy Partnership Explained

We are proud to be the first energy supplier to work alongside Ripple Energy. Seeing how Ripple and our partnership have grown from inception to today, has been a pleasure and a journey we're thrilled to be part of.

As a Cooperative, we too believe in giving back to local communities and funding ethical activities. So, we are in full support of the creation of new cooperatives and even better energy cooperatives.

When Ripple's first community energy project, Graig Fatha in southern Wales started, we were there as their first purchaser of electricity. With this 100% clean and renewable energy, we then send it to the homes of Your Co-op Energy customers' on the Community Power Tariff.

Why did Your Co-op Energy Decide to Partner with Ripple?

Your Co-op’s Head of Utilities, Stuart Newman answers why we partnered with Ripple Energy.

“It was an easy decision for us to partner with Ripple, our shared passion for community energy and supporting NetZero energy projects from the grassroots level is where we see great potential in the UK landscape.

“The clear list of benefits associated with Community energy is extensive and our joint activity will help to increase the profile of community-owned Renewables. Ripple Founder Sarah Merrick on Partnering with Your Co-op Energy

"Your Co-op Energy was Ripple's first supply partner when our first community-owned wind farm launched. They've been on the journey with us from the very beginning. We believe in energy cooperatives, where people get to own renewable energy assets like wind farms and solar parks. It means real people get to benefit from the country's transition towards green energy. We're glad so many Your Co-op Energy customers get to play their part in achieving this."

How Does Your Co-op Energy Bring Together Communities?

Our community power tariff guarantees that for every unit of electricity a customer uses on this tariff, another unit is purchased directly from a community generator.

This way we ensure Community energy groups receive:

A fair price for what they produce via a PPA

Funding in the form of grants via an application

Expertise from Younity to support community groups

Volunteering platform to help community groups

Thanks to community groups working together, investing in renewables and utilising all of Your Co-op Energy's and Younity's resources, we can provide 100% renewable and British-generated electricity. For every new Community Power Tariff customer, we add £10 to the powering communities fund to support future groups to start or improve their renewables projects.

How do you save money if you're part of an energy co-operative?

Ripple Energy estimates if you own enough of the renewable project to meet 100% of your home's electricity consumption, you'll save up to 25% off your bills when you join.

Your energy bill includes your electricity usage plus 'non-energy' costs which are grid charges, taxes and supplier costs. As your power is still supplied via the grid, you will still need to pay for these. This is why your electricity won't be free, but your bills should be a lot more stable and cheaper than before joining.

How much you save on any given bill is subject to the state of the energy market. Your savings are the difference between the unpredictable market price of electricity and the low and steady running costs of your renewables project. The savings rate is set each year, and savings are applied to your bill according to how much your share of the project generates each month.

Savings are applied to your bill regardless of how much you use, or what tariff you're on.

What are Energy Co-operatives?

Energy co-ops are collectively owned energy assets which could be a wind farm, solar park or any other renewable energy source. Using a cooperative model that facilitates collective ownership, single projects can have tens, hundreds or thousands of people investing and owning their own piece.

The reality is similar to owning your renewables without the need to fit, maintain, pay for and worry about transporting if you were to move home. Instead, you can enjoy savings on your energy bills thanks to the investment you made for your home.

What are some of the Benefits of being part of an Energy Co-operative?

One of the Fantastic things about co-operative energy is that people own the energy assets, placing local people at the heart of the renewable energy transition.

This means all those who invest and get involved can tangibly act on climate change in a way that's simple and easy to understand. You can have your own solar, wind or hydro generator powering your home without them taking up space on your roof or in your garden, and there's no costly installation or maintenance to worry about. A long-term benefit is that your ownership is transferable if you move home or If the worst was to happen, you can leave it to your family.

Instead, members of energy co-operatives enjoy all the benefits of renewables powering their homes, with all servicing, maintenance and insurance included, and none of the drawbacks of private ownership!

This alongside saving money, is one of the main motivations for people joining a community energy group or switching to our Community Power tariff.
