The UK and Scottish Governments have made a landmark announcement that promises to accelerate Scotland's transition to NetZero. This new partnership will unlock billions of pounds in funding for Scotland's renewable energy industry, positioning the nation as a global leader in sustainable energy.

A Pivotal Moment for Scottish Renewables

The UK Energy Secretary has visited Aberdeen with Great British Energy Chair Juergen Maier for the first time since the city was announced as the headquarters for the UK’s new publicly owned energy company.

Following the visit, the UK Government has signed a new agreement with the Scottish Government (Thursday 17 October) to boost Great British Energy’s ambitions to support clean energy supply chains and infrastructure.

Great British Energy will work with Scottish public bodies, including the Crown Estate Scotland, the Enterprise Agencies, and the Scottish National Investment Bank. Co-operation with these bodies also helps to ensure maximum impact and value for money from Scottish renewables projects.

Strengthening the Role of Great British Energy

Central to this partnership is the expansion of Great British Energy (GBE) in Scotland, a key part of the Labour Party's manifesto. The UK Government will sign a new agreement with the Scottish Government to bolster GBE's presence and capabilities within the country. This strategic move will enable GBE to play a more pivotal role in supporting Scotland's renewable energy projects and driving investment into the sector.

The UK Government is also working closely with Northern Ireland to explore opportunities for their renewables sector. The UK Government is aiming to speed up the transition to clean energy throughout the United Kingdom, not just in Britain.

A Boost to Scotland's Economy and Energy Security

The partnership is expected to deliver substantial long-term benefits to Scotland's economy and energy security. By attracting significant investment and fostering innovation, Scotland will create new jobs, stimulate economic growth, and reduce the nation's reliance on fossil fuels, all at an accelerated pace.

Key Facts and Figures:
  • Billions of pounds in funding: The partnership will unlock substantial financial resources to support Scotland's energy projects. Estimates suggest that private investment could reach £30-£60 billion.
  • The expanded role of GBE: Great British Energy will play a central role in driving investment, utilising the latest innovation and technology and overseeing development in Scotland's renewable energy sector.
  • Economic growth and job creation: The initiative is expected to create hundreds of thousands of jobs across Scotland, for Scottish people.
  • Enhanced energy security: By reducing the use of fossil fuels sourced from abroad, Scotland will increase its energy security.

A Promising Future for Scottish People, Scotland and the UK

Many of the skills required for the transition from traditional energy stations to renewables already exist in the workforce. Research from Offshore Energies UK shows that 90% of oil and gas workers have transferable skills for offshore renewable jobs. Which will be a key form of renewable energy for Scotland moving forward.

Acting UK Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy, Gillian Martin said:

"Scotland already has a strong pipeline of clean energy and supply chain opportunities, is at the forefront of floating offshore wind development, and has a depth of knowledge and experience on community and local energy. We look forward to working with Great British Energy to ensure it delivers real benefits for the people of Scotland and a just energy transition".

"To make sure that no offshore energy workers are left behind, the Scottish Government provided initial funding of £3.7 million between 2022 - 2024 for the development of the industry-led Skills Passport".
