Your Co-op Energy has been a net zero energy business since 2010, being led by the voice of our members as a Co-operative. Since then, we have teamed up with Octopus Energy to be our energy supply partner, to ensure our energy offering not only delivers net zero energy but a well-rounded set of benefits too.

The formation of our partnership with Octopus Energy in 2019 also marked the beginning of Younity, a joint venture that has helped to spearhead the Community Energy sector in the Great Britain.

What Do We Offer to Members & Customers?

Your Co-op Energy is the UK’s only supplier of a Community Power tariff (fixed), delivering 100% community owned renewable electricity. Additionally, we also offer a fixed and flexible tariff utilising 100% net zero carbon energy with prices matched to Octopus’, ensuring our fees are fair and as affordable as possible.

You can also take advantage of the Octoplus rewards programme due to our partnership. Customers with a smart metre can earn Octopoints to save money on energy bills, receive discounts on meals out and drinks, including a free weekly coffee, plus entertainment vouchers.

We always take the time to reward our customers when we can, which is why we have a refer a friend scheme that provides your account with £25 for every friend that switches to one of our tariffs. Great energy for them and a nice reward for you, easy peasy!

What is a Community Energy Group?

A collective ownership model of renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar panels and hydro-electric generators by like-minded people that have come together to form a community group.

Why Should Everyone be on the Community Power tariff?

  • Empowers  Communities around the country to be stakeholders in renewable energy production
  • Reduces nationwide reliance on expensive fossil fuels
  • Helps to influence more funding for the renewable energy sector (grid connecting and building new renewable sources)
  • Cuts our carbon emissions, leaving us with cleaner air
  • Connects like-minded people and provides volunteering and employment opportunities

How do we Support Community Energy Groups?

Younity was set up as a joint venture with Octopus Energy in 2019, to support the formation of new community energy groups and help to grow the sector. They achieve this by connecting people who are interested in becoming a stakeholder of renewables and volunteering for a community energy group. Younity also help to provide crucial financial grants that can get a new or existing community energy group up and running.

Once a community energy group Is generating electricity, Younity is also there to ensure that their electricity is sold at a fair price for the group and Your Co-op Energy, via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

How is GB Energy going to Impact the Energy Market?

As part of Labour’s 2024 manifesto, GB Energy will be rolled out by Government to bring positive, zero carbon change.

Here’s what you can expect to see from GB Energy soon…
  • “Partnering energy companies, local authorities and cooperatives to develop 8GWs small-scale and medium-scale community energy projects”.
  • “Profits will flow directly back into local communities to cut bills, not to the shareholders of foreign companies”.
  • “This will help to create a more decentralised energy system, with more local generation and ownership, and will help to create a more resilient energy system”.
This is set to be one of the most significant shake-ups to the energy market this century, with the nation shifting away from large fossil fuel suppliers dominating the grid to a greater share of community owned renewable energy.

Community energy dilutes the concentration of control over the energy market and will help to kickstart the deployment of more renewables and build more infrastructure to connect it.

As we look towards the seconds half of this decade, it’s clear to see there is a vision of a far cleaner energy market that will in-time, reduce our bills, create a new leg of our green economy and provide cleaner air for all.
